Flight Review: Lufthansa, Short Haul Economy Class
LH118 Frankfurt To Munich
Airbus A321 (Stretched version of A320)
Even if Lufthansa cost a hundred buck lesser, I would still choose Middle Eastern or Asian Airlines. It is simply because their cabin service and hard product are generally much better. Months ago, someone told me that taking a flight is like taking a bus ride, boring as hell. While that is not the case for most of my flight, especially with Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific, I certainly agree with him on this flight with Lufthansa.
LH118 (Economy Class)
Frankfurt Main International Airport to Munich International Airport
Total Duration: 1Hr
Aircraft type: Airbus A321 (Stretched version of A320)
Seat configuration: 3-3
Flying with Lufthansa on a short haul flight is almost like flying with budget airlines- no in-flight entertainment system, no leg room and minimize service. In Germany airport, everything is almost DIY for Lufthansa economy class passengers. Passengers have to print their own boarding pass, tag their own check-in luggage and scan their own boarding pass during boarding.
The Seat on Lufthansa Airbus A321
The seat on this aircraft is very much similar like the budget airlines. It has a thin cushioning with no headrest, making it stiff and uncomfortable to sit on. While there is little legroom space on every row, it is still slightly wider than the budget airlines. It was not a surprise to have little legroom, since it is usually the case when flying with small aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 on most airlines.
What was actually surprising was their business class. If you think that the business class passengers have a better seat product, you are totally wrong.
This is their business class cabin, with the exact same seat product as the economy class. They basically just block off the middle seat, selling the seat on the window and aisle.
During The Flight
I made a seat change to an empty row once the flight reached the cruising level. The crew were pretty fast with their cabin service, since it was a 1hr flight with a light load. The main cabin service was basically just drink service, serving some coffee, tea, juices, soft drinks, wine and beer. The meal were basically just that small pack of chocolate biscuit, which was issued at the door entrance during boarding.
Once the crew complete the service, the cabin was dimmed down for the night flight. It was certainly an easy flight for the crew.
Just before landing, I made a trip to the lavatory. With no surprise, the amenities are kept to the bare minimum, with no hand cream for hydration and etc.
Lufthansa mainly utilized their A320/321 on regional routes around Europe. If you are finding a flight within Europe, you should certainly consider the budget airlines like RyanAir or EasyJet, since their hard product(cabin & seat) are not much of a difference.
The long haul economy class seat product on Lufthansa have slightly thicker cushioning and personal screen as compared to their short haul product. When you are taking a connecting flight in Germany to other European cities, you will be transferring on a small aircraft with this kind of seat product.
Hence, I always prefer to fly with the Middle Eastern or Asian airlines since I will have a better seat product and cabin service all the way to my final destination. Seat comfort and in-flight entertainment system are really important for long hours travelling.
Qatar Airways is typically my top choice if you were to ask me. They have a great hard product and cabin service. Qatar Airways came in second on the yearly Skytrax Best Airline Award, where Singapore Airlines and Emirates came in third and fourth. Their promotional fares are typically lower than other premium airlines like Emirates and of course Singapore Airlines.
